Quarter to Semester Conversion

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is pleased to share our plans for the transition to semesters, scheduled to begin in Summer 2012.

We have made semester transition proposals for our undergraduate BME major program, our undergraduate BME minor program, and our BME graduate programs, including those for Master's, Doctoral, and M.D.-Ph.D. degrees. All BME program proposals are based on the following principles:

  1. Student progress toward completion of the program will not be impeded by the semester conversion.
  2. BME will be proactive in anticipating issues specific to each class during the transition process and will work with students to minimize other issues as they arise.

Comments on semester conversion

  • The BME Undergraduate Studies Committee (USC) began discussions on the conversion process in the Fall 2009 quarter. Weekly meetings have taken place since the start of Winter 2010, with accompanying updates to the full faculty at regular meetings. Similarly, a subcommittee of the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) worked on the transition policies of the graduate programs starting in Fall 2009, with updates discussed at full faculty meetings.
  • A sample of the semester BME undergraduate Major curriculum sheet can be seen here.
  • Undergraduate students who will be affected by the semester conversion will be required to meet with the Department several quarters before Summer 2012 to create an individualized transition curriculum plan to ensure the smoothest possible transition into semesters. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to meet with the graduate advisor before transition.
  • For the undergraduate BS degree, ABET minimum requirements will be maintained throughout the transition for all students.

Statement from College of Engineering

The College of Engineering has also been pro-active in preparations for the transition to semesters, with multiple committees meeting since early 2009. A statement from the college, including a list of Frequently Asked Questions, can be viewed at http://engineering.osu.edu/q2s/
