Posted:

A group of Ohio State engineers have been nationally recognized for their work with the OncoFilter, invented by BME senior Kinshuk Mitra.

Mitra, along with fellow BME senior Brett Geiger, electrical engineering freshman Aaron Maharry, and BME freshman Preethi Chidambaram comprise the OncoFilter team, whose innovative work in cancer diagnostic technology has earned them a position as one of 19 finalist groups for the Lemelson-MIT National Collegiate Student Prize. The OncoFilter is a microbead mesh that can easily and efficienty separate healthy blood cells from cancer cells, allowing early detection for cancer.

The competition consists of 2 categories,"Use it!" and "Cure it!," and the OncoFilter team is one of four groups competing in the "Cure it!" category. First prize in the competition would grant the team a $10,000 cash prize, a national media campagin, exposure to investment and business communities, and a trip to MIT for an award celebration in June.

Best of luck to the team, and the Department congratulates the students on their tremendous success!
