The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) 2016 Annual Meeting took place October 5th – 8 in Minneapolis. Hundreds gathered in the Minneapolis Convention Center to hear our very own BME Chair and BMES President, Dr. Richard T. Hart’s, State of the Society Address.

In his address, Dr. Hart discussed creating more diveristy within the enginering field and increasing the number of graduating minorities in engineering in a joint partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and Karl Reid, Executive Director of NSBE, to help meet their ambitious goal to graduate 10,000 black engineers every year by 2025.

Students, faculty, and staff from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Ohio State University joined Dr. Hart in Minneapolis. In addition the Ohio State booth exhibition, the department also hosted its second annual evening reception where fellowship was shared among the department, joined by friends and colleagues.

During the BMES Annual Meeting, the organization presents several awards recognizing outstanding contributions to biomedical engineering by students and student chapters.  We would like to congratulate the Ohio State BMES student chapter and the chapters faculty advisor, Dr. Mark Ruegsegger, for receiving the 2016 Outstanding Chapter-Industry Achievement Award. This is a new award addition, just recently added in 2016, and is given to student chapters with exceptional activities and outreach with industry. The award comes with an engraved plaque, travel support reimbursements for two members of the chapter up to $1,000 and two complimentary Annual Meeting registrations. The winning chapter was also asked to lead a panel discussion at the chapter development workshop at the BMES Annual Meeting.

A record number of attendees gathered at this year’s BMES Annual Meeting. The four-day meeting featured nearly 2,400 scientific research presentations, more than 800 oral presentations and more than 1,500 posters. We are looking foward to next year's meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
