James W. Ibinson, MD, PhD

"Applied Medical Literature Review for Engineers"

Dr. Ibinson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His primary area of research is Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of pain processing, specifically

focused on the effects that acute and chronic pain exert on cerebral function. Most recently, his lab has identified a potential area of the brain that may serve as an objective biomarker for a patient’s pain. His award-winning work has been featured in multiple national and international Anesthesiology conferences.

Dr. Ibinson is a noted expert in the application of statistics to issues within medicine. He is the lead author of a chapter on applied statistics in the forthcoming edition of a major anesthesiology text, and provides his expertise in the fields of pain, statistics, and imaging as a reviewer for several major medical journals, including Anesthesia and Analgesia, Pain, and the Journal of Neuroscience.

Dr. Ibinson also serves as the Director of Medical Student Research for the department, with leadership duties in resident physician education and department-wide quality assurance committees. He is a former chief resident of Anesthesiology and a Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research Scholar, and was recently recognized by the Dean of the School of Medicine through his appointment in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Career Mentoring Program.

Dr. Ibinson is a Buckeye, graduating with a BS Chemical Engineering in 1995, MS Biomedical Engineering in 2003, PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2004 and MD in 2006. He earned his MD and PhD in the Medical Scientist Program.
