Faculty Highlights: Summer 2016

  • B. Rita Alevriadou, associate professor of the Deapartment of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Internal Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine), was  awarded a two-year $154,000 grant from the American Heart Association (AHA) for her study entitled “Redox regulation of autophagy in post-ischemic vascular endothelial cells”. The project is in collaboration with Dr. Jay Zweier, Professor of Internal Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine), Physiology and Cell Biology, at The Ohio State University. The project runs from January 1, 2016 – December 31, 2017.

  • Samir Ghadiali, professor, BME, served as acting chair for the Department of Biomedical Engineering, from January 1, 2016 – June 30, 2016.

  • Keith Gooch, professor, BME, was promoted from associate to full professor, effective June 2, 2016.

  • Derek Hansford, associate professor, BME, received the 2016 Herman R. Weed Excellence in Teaching Award from the Department of Biomedical at Ohio State.

  • Xiaoming He, associate professor, BME, received the 2016 Lumley Research Award from the College of Engineering at Ohio State. In addition, he was recently awared two 5-year R01 grants with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and a 3-year grant from the National Science Foundation (click here for the full details).

  • Jun Liu, PhD, associate professor, BME, recently received notification that her R01 grant submission has been accepted by the National Institute of Health (NIH), awarded in the amount of $1.8 million, and will be funded for five years. The title of her research is “Ocular Pulse Elastography” and her Co-Investigators include Thomas Mauger (Ophthalmology), Cynthia Roberts (Ophthalmology and BME), Paul Weber (Ophthalmology), and Jeff Pan (Center for Biostatistics, at Ohio State).

  • Mark Ruegsegger, associate professor of practice and director of undergraduate studies of BME, received the 2016 David C. McCarthy Engineering Teaching Award from the College of Engineering at Ohio State.

  • Jessica Winter, professor, Chemical & Biomoleculer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, received the 2016 Faculty Diversity Excellence Award from the College of Engineering at Ohio State.

  • Mingun Zhang, professor, BME, was recently featured in The Columbus Dispatch for his breakthrough research involving English Ivy.
