The 7th Annual Ohio State Biomedical Engineering Conference

The 7th Annual Ohio State Biomedical Engineering Conference (OSBMEC) took place on September 13th, in Bevis Hall. The OSBMEC takes place annually and is hosted by the Biomedical Engineering Society, OSU Chapter. Sponsors included: The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), National Chapter; the Department of Biomedical Engineering; and The Ohio Union, Office of Student Life. This year’s guest speaker was Andrew L. Lux, Ph.D. Lux is the Senior Vice President of Operations and Quality Assurance for AtriCure Inc.

Faculty members participated as volunteer judges during the poster session. Students presented their research posters and were judged according to criteria that included knowledge of the research, significance, methods and quality of the presentation. This year’s first place Graduate Award winner was BME student Samuel Wordeman, for his poster titled “Relationship Between Isokinetic Knee Extension Strength and Functional Extensor Power Production In ACL-Reconstructed Subjects”. He was advised by Ben Roewer (Sports Medicine), Stephanie Di Stasi (Sports Medicine), Chris Nagelli (Biomedical Engineering and Sports Medicine), and Tim Hewett (Biomedical Engineering and Sports Medicine).

The first place Undergraduate Award recipient was Ryan Reyes, for his poster titled, “miR-23a: A Key Metabolic Regulator in Hepatocellular Carcinoma,” advised by Tasneem Motiwala and Samson Jacob from the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry and the Comprehensive and Cancer Center, College of Medicine.

BME graduate student Christopher Scheitlin, received the OSBMEC Travel Award and was presented with a $200 travel grant for his poster titled “Endogenous Nitric Oxide Regulates Calcium Homeostasis in Sheared Vascular Endothelial Cells.” He was advised by Colton Lloyd, Mark Ziolo, and Rita Alevriadou, from Biomedical Engineering and the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. Christopher will have the opportunity to present his research at the 2013 BMES Conference in Seattle, Washington.
