The Department of Biomedical Engineering wishes to congratulate Dr. Yi Zhao, BME associate professor, for receiving an award for his proposal to the National Science Foundation entitled: "I-Corps:  Commercialization of A High Throughput Cell Mechanical Stimulator." Over the course of one year, Dr. Zhao will receive $50,000 for his research.

Below is a summary of Dr. Zhao's research:

"This project is to explore the commercialization potential of a high throughput cell mechanical stimulator, which applies controlled strain to a large number of in vitro cultured cell groups. The technology will provide an important research tool for biological researchers in the field of cellular biomechanics and mechanobiology, which can be used for cell-based drug screening to evaluate the role of drugs in the regulation of cellular responses to mechanical stimulation; and for exploring the mechanisms that govern cellular mechanotransduction, a process that is involved in many physiological events, disease development, and clinical treatments."
