Mikayla Lowenkamp Receives Ohio State Research Scholar Award

Posted:

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) would like to congratulate Mikayla Lowenkamp on her successful application for The Ohio State University Research Scholar Award.

Mikayla, a senior in BME, currently working in the lab of Dr. Douglas Kniss, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and BME, is researching the cell biomechanics of uterine stromal fibroblasts for studies of cervical ripening in preparation for birth. This project will focus on the molecular and mechanical changes that occur at the cellular level in response to inflammation and how progesterone can thwart these changes. By better understanding how progesterone governs the biomechanical changes in cervical stromal fibroblasts in preparation for labor and birth, one can better refine the therapy for those patients threatened with preterm delivery.

The Office of Undergraduate Education, in partnership with the Undergraduate Research Office, designates up to 300 first-time Undergraduate Research Scholars every year. Each scholar receives a one-time award of $1000. Applications are accepted year-round, on or before the first of each month.

Congratulations Mikayla!
