BME holds third International Summer Design Experience (iSDE) program

Posted:

Professor Mark Ruegsegger and the Department of Biomedical Engineering recently hosted the 3rd International Summer Design Experience (iSDE) in August at The Ohio State University . This year's multi-phase program marks a breaking record in student participation -- seven students from Ohio State's Department of Biomedical Engineering joined with thirteen students from Nanjing University in China and six students from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) with the focus of learning the engineering design process to create medical devices.  The program is held in collaboration with Dr. Gang Ruan from Nanjing University and this year Dr. Ron Xu, associate professor, BME, also brought students from USTC.

Participants worked in teams with clinical mentors from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and clients. Teams helped complete the final testing of unfinished Capstone projects so they could be delivered to the client for use, as well as gained experience in machining, building, testing, 3D printing, and designing.

The event successfully incorporated a global perspective to engineering design, and is planned to be hosted alternately at the different institutions in the future, with next year’s program being held at Nanjing University in China.
