Dr. Ruegsegger selected as a mentor in Faculty FIT program

Posted:

Dr. Mark Ruegsegger, associate professor of practice and Director of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Undergraduate Education, has been selected to participate in the Faculty FIT mentoring program through The Ohio State University Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Ruegsegger is one of 20 mentors selected to be part of the inaugural class of outstanding teachers.

The Faculty FIT: Foundation, Impact, Transformation program matches a small group of new faculty with a faculty mentor who is an exceptional teacher. The program spans across disciplines and engages groups in work that focuses on teaching and learning. The goals of the program include assisting new faculty in getting familiar with Ohio State and its teaching and learning mission, policies, and culture, as well as to help new faculty connect with the Ohio State teaching community. The program is customized for new faculty of varying experience and skills to help participants find their “fit” at Ohio State.

The University Institute for Teaching and Learning supports a call President Michael V. Drake made during his investiture address in March 2015 to make Ohio State as highly regarded for teaching and learning as it is for research.  The institute's mission is to enhance ongoing teaching and learning efforts and elevate their visibility and importance across the university and beyond. The institute will focus on four key areas: instructional development support; research to measure effectiveness of teaching outcomes; policy development concerning faculty roles, review and rewards; and communication to share success stories and learn from other institutions.

Professor Ruegsegger’s skills, qualifications, and engagement in the Ohio State community indicate his value to his cohort of new faculty mentees and the entire Faculty FIT program. Dr. Ruegsegger teaches the BME undergraduate design course, and is a recent recipient of the 2016 College of Engineering David D. McCarthy Engineering Teaching Award. He also leads a two-week International Summer Design Experience program (iSDE) in collaboration with Nanjing University (NJU) in China. Each year the camp alternates locations between The Ohio State University and Nanjing University with the goal of exposing both groups of students to diverse ideas and hands-on experience in biomedical engineering.

Congratulations, Dr. Ruegsegger!
