Dr. Purmessur and Dr. Moore (Veterinary neurosurgeon) received the Consortium for Advancement of Neuromusculoskeletal Science pilot grant ($10,000) from the CANSL Emerging Signature Program through the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine which is only given to 1 project.

Neurovascular/immune cell interactions in the pathogenesis of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions of the spine

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is an important cause of neurologic dysfunction and chronic pain in dogs and the incidence of IVDD in dachshunds is approximately 20%. Neurovascular ingrowth has been implicated in the pathogenesis of painful IVDD. Although the cause of neurovascular ingrowth is unknown, structural breakdown of the extracellular matrix and expression of angiogenic (VEGF) and neurotrophic (NGF) ligands within the IVD are thought to be contributing factors. Our research addresses this knowledge gap by investigating the role innate immune cells play in the process of how neurovascular ingrowth manifests in the spontaneously degenerating canine disc. This work is clinically important because it has the ability to therapeutically alter the treatment of IVDD in the veterinary setting.
