Recently, Biomedical Engineering graduate students Yixiao Cui and Audrey Nguyen participated in the 2018 Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum. Cui and Nguyen placed in first and second in the engineering division, respectively. Cui was awarded a $600 prize for placing in first. The Research Forum is a showcase for the innovative research that is conducted by Ohio State graduate students across all disciplines. Students participating in the Forum must create a poster and an oral presentation to present to the judges. In total, over $14,000 is awarded to the top-judged presentations.

Yixiao Cui’s research presentation is titled "Brain cancer migration in tissue mimetic hydrogels.” Her advisor is Jessica Winter, professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

Audrey Nguyen’s research is titled “Biomechanical impact of the sclera on corneal deformation response to an air-puff: a finite-element study.” It was co-authored by BME assistant professor Matthew Reilly and Cynthia Roberts. Nguyen’s graduate advisor is Dr. Cynthia Roberts, professor in BME and Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Dr. Reilly’s assistant professor.

Students Ben Scandling, Deep Gandhi and Colin Hisey also participated in the Forum. Ben Scandling’s research is titled “A Computationally Modeled Mechanism of Cellular Morphological Response to Cyclic Force.” His graduate advisor and co-author is Dr. Keith Gooch, professor in BME. Deep Gandhi’s research is titled “Magnetic Resonance of the Kidneysat its comparison to ADC and FA measurements.” Gandhi’s grad advisor is Dr. Arunark Kolipaka, associate professor in radiology, College of Medicine. The project was co-authored by research associate Prateek Kalra (radiology, College of Medicine), Huiming Dong (grad student, BME), and Brian Raterman (imaging manager, radiology, College of Medicine). Colin Hisey’s research is titled “Microfluidic Affinity Isolation of Ovarian Cancer Exosomes.” His advisors are Dr. Derek Hansford, associate professor in BME, and Dr. Karuppaiyah Selvendrian, associate professor for the College of Medicine.

Congratulations to all BME students on their research, and best of luck in the future!
