Duarte-Sanmiguel awarded AHA Predoctoral Fellowship

Posted:

Silvia Duarte Sanmiguel, a graduate research associate in Biomedical Engineering, was recently awarded a Predoctoral Fellowship from the American Heart Association (AHA). Silvia received her B.S. in Microbiology from the Javeriana University (Colombia) and she joined the Interdisciplinary PhD in Nutrition Program in 2014. Currently she is working under the supervision of assistant professor Daniel Gallego-Perez, Departments of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, and her research involves the development and study of novel micro/nanoscale technologies to control the behavior of immune cells within the context of health and disease (e.g., diabetes and cancer). Overall, her goal is to develop novel therapeutic approaches against cancer or diabetic co-morbidities by “re-educating” immune cells that have gone awry.

Silvia plans to pursue a career focused on studying diseases associated with the immune system, and developing therapies to treat them. The competitive two-year fellowship runs July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2020.

Congratulations Silvia!
