(Case) with a 3.85 GPA--summa cum laude--and a concentration in polymer chemistry. He continued his graduate training at Case, receiving his MS degree in 1997 and PhD degree in 2001, both in Biomedical Engineering. In 2001, he accepted a joint appointment at Ohio State with the Biomedical Engineering Center and Department of Internal Medicine (Division of Cardiovascular Medicine) as part of a University Selective Investment initiative in Cardiovascular Research.

In 2007, he transferred to the Clinical track within the Department of Biomedical Engineering and prior to his most recent promotion held the position of Associate Professor of Practice. As Director of Undergraduate Education in BME, Ruegsegger is heavily involved in developing policy and curriculum for the BME undergraduate degree program and BME Minor. He also has a curricular focus on the BME Domain courses and labs, and the Senior Design capstone course.

As the primary instructor for the BME Senior Capstone Design course, Ruegsegger coordinates the multi-disciplinary team projects, which include Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering students, as well as clinical mentors from Occupational & Physical Therapy, other Medical and Engineering disciplines, and industry. Many project teams build a device that provides assistance to those with disabilities, spinal cord injury, or other needs. The success and expansion of this course has led to the creation of a Summer Design Experience (SDE) for BME juniors, for pre-Capstone training of the engineering design process. In 2014, the SDE evolved into an international collaboration by partnering with a professor from Nanjing University, China. We are now hosting the SDE at alternating sites, allowing students to experience a global perspective on engineering design and team skills. In Summer 2017, the SDE became a formal study abroad course, where BME students earn three hours of technical elective credit.

Congratulations Dr. Ruegsegger!
