BME celebrates Engineers Week 2024

Engineers Week Feb 18-24, 2024 Welcome to the Future

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) celebrated National Engineers Week (EWeek) last week with two BME organized events, in addition to college and student organization led events. Both BME events offered students opportunities to socialize with each other and faculty while snacking on homemade BME themed cookies and buckeye candies.

EWeek was established in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers to raise public awareness of engineers’ positive contributions to the quality of life. This year’s theme “Welcome to the Future” is about celebrating today’s achievements and paving the way for a brighter and more diverse future in engineering.

In the spirit of this year’s EWeek theme, BME students were asked to share on post-it notes that they hung on the glass walls of Fontana Labs' Student Lounge how they hope to make the future brighter with their degree in BME. One student wrote "My dream is to create and implement a global system to make medical devices more accessible to all remote areas in the world." Another shared "I hope to bridge the gap between scientists, clinicians and patients."

Post it notes that say encouraging things, like "be proud of yourself"

During the community building event, students were also asked to write notes of encouragement or positivity for their peers on post-it notes to contribute to OSU's Buckeye Love Campaign.

“It was lovely to see students come out to share kindness with each other,” said Rebecca Hudgins, BME’s Department Coordinator, “I can’t help but feel joy and #BuckeyeLove when I walk past the wall of their post-it notes.”

The following day BME held a “Pizza with Professors” event for graduate students that drew over 40 people into Fontana Labs 2000 for pizza, conversation, community, and fun. Graduate students were eager to have informal conversations with professors over pizza. The room was filled with chatter that ranged from discussing research, to student plans for the future, to sharing favorite video games.

“The Pizza with Professors event was great for the BME grad community. Whether students were sitting back and taking in the buzz of all the happy conversations, or introducing themselves to folks they hadn't met yet, it was a great opportunity to hang out with faculty and students and just breathe for a change," shared long time Graduate Studies Coordinator for BME, Melanie Senitko.

EWeek 2024 was well celebrated in BME at OSU this year. We look forward to celebrating EWeek with students and faculty again next year!

If you would like to support community building events for BME undergraduate and graduate students at OSU, consider making a one time donation to our department.
