Journal features Dr. He's lab in current issue

Posted:

BME Ph.D. candidate, Pranay Agarwal and fellow members of Associate BME Professor Dr. Xiaoming He's lab designed and microfabricated a nonplanar microfluidic device to produce microcapsules that mimic the anatomic architecture of pre-hatching embyos, the native home of embryonic stem cells. Miniaturized 3D culture of mouse embyonic stem cells in the microcapsules renders the cells much higher stemness and capability of differentiating into beating heart cells compared to conventional 2D and 3D cultures. This technology (patent pending) has the potential to greatly facilitate mass production of pluripotent stem cells with high stemness for their ever-increasing use in regenerative medicine. The group's work will be featured in the Lab on a Chip journal, and is the cover story for the current issue.
